Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Mugs

Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons Dutch-processed cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of ground nutmeg
  • 3 tablespoons Kahlua coffee liqueur
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract optional
  • Mini marshmallows, Whipped cream, Salted caramel sauce, Chocolate syrup, Chocolate shavings or curls (Optional Toppings)

Instructions

  • Add milk, sugar, cocoa powder, cinnamon, and nutmeg to a medium saucepan.
  • Place over medium heat and whisk constantly until everything is well combined and heated through, about 2-3 minutes.
  • Heat until steaming but not boiling. This takes about 5 minutes total.
  • Remove from heat and stir in the Kahlua coffee liqueur and vanilla extract if using.
  • Divide the hot chocolate between two mugs.
  • Add toppings. Finish with your choice of whipped cream, marshmallows, or other toppings.

Notes

  • Don't let the milk boil! Heat until just steaming to avoid scalding or curdling.
  • For a richer drink, we sometimes use half-and-half or melt in dark chocolate instead of using just cocoa powder.
  • We’ve found 3 tablespoons of Kahlua per 2 cups of milk is the sweet spot, but feel free to tweak it.
  • For more coffee flavor, we sometimes add a shot of espresso with the Kahlua.
  • You can even make this ahead of time and reheat it later. Just wait to add the Kahlua until right before serving so the flavor stays bold and smooth.
