Equipment

  • Mixing Glass
  • Bar Spoon
  • Jigger
  • Strainer
  • Old Fashioned glass or rocks glass

Ingredients

  • 2 oz dark rum
  • 1/4 oz Demerara syrup or 1 tsp granulated sugar
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 dash orange bitters optional
  • Orange peel for garnish

Instructions

  • Start by adding your rum, Demerara syrup, and bitters to the mixing glass.
  • Fill the glass about 2/3 full with ice.
  • Stir everything for about 30 seconds until the drink is nicely chilled.
  • Strain it into an old fashioned glass over a large ice cube.
  • Twist an orange peel over the glass to release its oils, then drop it in as your garnish.

Notes

  • No Demerara syrup? Use simple syrup or muddle a sugar cube with the bitters. You can also try something fun like maple syrup or honey for a unique twist.
  • Feel like experimenting? Try bitters like chocolate or cardamom for a different flavor. Just a dash will do as it is easy to go overboard.
  • Start with less syrup and adjust as you go. It is easier to add more than to try to fix a drink that’s too sweet.
  • Use the best rum you can. With a simple cocktail like this, the quality of the rum makes all the difference.
